11/10/20 Celtic Reds 3-3 Hanwell Town Reds
This was a proper game of football, played by 2 very evenly matched and competitive teams, neither of whom were prepared to give any quarter. The tackles were flying in, though the game was generally played in good spirit.
Our 1st goal came very early in the game after good play from Antonio in the box forced Hanwell into conceding a dubious penalty which Mayor converted convincingly. Hanwell Town came straight back though and had a penalty of their own not much later to bring the scores level.
Our 2nd goal came from a well taken corner by Will which took a deflection and came back to Mark who drilled it through a crowded penalty box into the bottom right corner. Hanwell came back again and just before half time were awarded a dubious penalty of their own to make it all evens at half-time.
The 2nd half saw much pressure from Hanwell who were pressing for another goal which they got with a wonder strike with just 10 minutes to go. Celtic were not to be beaten however and with just a minute remaining on the clock were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Luka floated in a wonderful ball and Holy was there to head in to make it 3:3 for the final score.
Well done boys you really dug deep to keep Hanwell Town at bay. They were a very good team with lots of attacking threat, but our defence held firm to keep them out. A special mention must go to Ali who made a number of great saves to keep us in the game.
25/10/20 Celtic Red 2-1 St Josephs Red
This was very much a game of attrition. With 6 payers out (2 injured and 4 isolating) we were down to the bare bones of a team, so the primary objective of the match was not to concede and to that end we did a very good job. It wasn’t until halfway through the 2nd half when a rare slip by Wumni (who was deputising for Ali in goal and up to that point had done an excellent job of keeping a clean sheet) allowed St Josephs to bundle in the ball from close range and take the lead.
We were however not to be beaten and with 10 minutes to go a very dangerous cross ball from Hadi allowed KO to sweep it in at the back post. This was followed up 5 minutes later with a 2nd goal from KO when Wunmi punted it up field and KO managed to nick it off the goalkeeper and into the net. We were however hanging on at the end and Wunmi more than atoned for his earlier mistake with a fantastic point blank save with his foot to keep the lead and allow us to close out the game.
Considering the circumstances this was a fantastic win. With 6 players out, most of whom would have been natural starters, many players playing out of their natural position, 2 players who hadn’t played for us before and another 2 who were coming back from injury/illness and were a long way from being match fit. You hung in there and fought for every ball until the final whistle – well done you can be very pleased with yourselves.
1/11/20 Pitshanger 2-3 Celtic
This was very much a game of 2 halves. The 1st half was one of Celtic domination with 3 unanswered goals. The 1st goal was scored by Mayor after a neat counter attack from Christian who them crossed for Mayor to lash it in. The 2nd was also scored by Mayor after Alex played him a neat through ball, he then showed real strength and guile to beat 2 players and then the goalkeeper with a fine shot. The 3rd was made by a lovely cross from Hadi to the far post, where in the confusion KO was 1st to react and smash it past the goal keeper.
In the 2nd half Pitshanger came back strong and scored 2 goals from crosses, both of which should have been dealt with and lead to a very nervy end with the boys just holding on for a narrow win. Well done boys – still unbeaten this season – keep it up.
6/12/20 Celtic 4-1 Larkspur Rovers
Our 1st comfortable win and how nice it was to feel relaxed on the touchline towards the end. Larkspur initially started brightly but Celtic soon took control of the game and scored after 10 minutes when a nicely worked corner came back to Luka who crossed for Mayor to head home at the back post. We had practiced that in training just the day before so it was pleasing to see it work so well in a real match situation. After that it was all Celtic pressure until a mis-placed back pass was intercepted by their striker who scored with only Ali to beat. After that Larkspur came back into it a bit and Celtic laboured to break them down for the rest of the half.
The 2nd half initially started in a similar fashion to the end of the 1st half in that Celtic continued to struggle to break through, however a fortuitous penalty awarded to us when Khaled tripped over himself gave the boys the break through they needed and Mayor made no mistake from the spot. After that Celtic started to look much more threatening on the counter and a delightful through ball from Christian, allowed Isa to sprint almost half the pitch unopposed and then finish neatly past the goalkeeper. Our final goal was made by some sumptuous 1 touch football between Mark, Luka and Kkaled that ripped open Larkspur’s defence leaving Khaled one on one with the goalkeeper who he beat with neat finish into the bottom corner. This goal with the simple but devastating build up play was definitely my favourite one so far this season – an absolute pleasure on the eye – may there be many of these to come.
Well done boys, much more convincing today especially in the 2nd half. Slip ups (or was it slap ups) by both Hanwell Town and United Youth means that we leap frog them both and are now top of the league, let’s make sure that we stay there until the end of the season.
